Zalgiris takes down Nevezis in Maksvytis debut 4
In the debut match of coach Kazys Maksvytis, Zalgiris Kaunas (23-3) visited Nevezis-Optibet Kedainiai (6-20) in the Lithuanian Basketball League. Zalgiris overcame their opponents with the final score of 72-64 (19-16, 15-13, 20-14, 18-21).
Edgaras Ulanovas led Zalgiris with 12 points (5/9 2PT, 2/2 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 20 PIR.
On the opposing side, Dominykas Stenionis was the high-scorer for Nevezis-Optibet, ending with 15 points (3/7 2PT, 3/6 3 PT) and 5 assists.
Nevezis-Optibet opened the last quarter with 8-0 run and the hopes to win a game came back (51-60). Ulanovas responded with 2+1, Josh Nebo made a dunk and Zalgiris could breath easily (65-51).
The hosts managed to reduce the lead to 6 (64-70) but the time expired and Zalgiris sealed the first victory for their new coach Kazys Maksvytis.
Zalgiris started a game better because of dominant Ulanovas performance (17-10). He scored 9 points in the first period alone. But Dominykas Stenionis’ amazing half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer let Nevezis-Optibet to reduce the deficit to 3 points (16-19) after the first quarter.
Zalgiris gained more comfortable lead after the half time. Niels Giffey poured a 3-pointer and a layup, Arturas Milaknis added back-to-back threes and Lithuanian champions extended their lead to 14 points (47-33).
