Zalgiris loses in Berlin after leading the game for 39 minutes 65
Zalgiris Kaunas (5-7) started the double EuroLeague week with a setback. Kazys Maksvytis’ team lost 62-64 (20-13, 8-12, 17-14, 17-25) to ALBA Berlin (2-10) on the road.
Kaunas team jumped out to an early lead. Edgaras Ulanovas opened the game, Kevarrius Hayes made two free throws, and Dovydas Giedraitis scored 10 points to make it 14-4. Keenan Evans and Danielius Lavrinovicius each hit a three-pointer to make it 20-4, but three straight three-pointers by the opponents brought them a bit closer, 20-13.
Zalgiris newcomer Edmond Sumner scored four points and Tomas Dimsa added the same number, and the difference grew back to double digits, 28-16. However, Zalgiris players did not score any points for almost six minutes of the remaining period, and the opponents got even closer, 28-25.
Ulanovas connected from long range, Evans and Hayes made tough lay-ups, and Rolands Smits scored four points, 39-34. Giedraitis drove to the basket, Laurynas Birutis hit free throws and Dimsa finished the quarter with a two-pointer, 45-39.
Lavrinovicius made another three-pointer from the corner, Dimsa scored five points in a row and Evans scored from the free-throw line, 55-46. Three free throws were made by Ulanovas, and Evans added a point from the free throw line, but the score was tied at 59-59 with less than two minutes to play. Then Giedraitis hit a three-pointer, but with less than 7 seconds to play, the visitors were already chasing their opponents, 62-64. The last possession of Zalgiris wasn’t successful, and ALBA won the game leading for just 7 seconds.
Giedraitis had his best game in his EuroLeague career with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Dimsa added 11 points in the loss.
