Zalgiris adds Italian to the coaching staff 11
Zalgiris Kaunas will soon add an Italian specialist to its coaching staff. Andrea Trinchieri’s assistant in Kaunas will be his compatriot Massimiliano Menetti.
The 50-year-old has extensive experience in European basketball, most recently as head coach of Hapoel Eilat in Israel.
“As we said as soon as Andrea Trinchieri arrived, we gave him time to look around. Now we have agreed with him how we can strengthen the coaching staff. All the coaches who have been on the staff so far will also stay with the club and their functions will remain unchanged. The addition is necessary to allow us to run an even better process during practices and matches,” said Zalgiris Kaunas Director Paulius Jankunas.
Menetti, who started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Reggiana in Emilia Reggio, coached the women’s basketball team in the same city for four years (1999-2003), with which he became national champion, before returning to men’s basketball.
At Reggiana, he worked as an assistant coach and took over the helm of the team in 2006 and 2008. He then spent one season as an assistant coach with Montegranaro Sutor Basket before returning to Reggiana in 2010.
In 2011, Menetti was appointed head coach of the team, a position he held for eight years, leading the Reggiana players not only in Italy but also in the European Cup.
In 2012, his team won the second Italian league, in 2014 he won the European Challenge Cup trophy and in 2015 the Italian Super Cup.
In 2018, the new Zalgiris coaching staff member took over the helm of Treviso, won the second Italian league, and managed the team for three years in the strongest Italian basketball league, leading the team to the FIBA Champions League.
In the 2022-2023 season, Menetti was once again the head coach of the familiar Reggiana club, and the team also competed in the FIBA Champions League.
