Zalgiris rallies past Virtus at home 7
Zalgiris Kaunas fought off Virtus Bologna 96-81 (22-22, 21-27, 25-14, 28-18) to snap a three-game losing streak in the EuroLeague. Zalgiris took over in the third quarter and conceded just 32 points in the second half for a 12-18 record, including a 7-7 mark at home.
Edmond Sumner scored 16 points while Keenan Evans added 14 points and 7 assists. Three other players scored in double figures for the winners.
Virtus dropped to 17-13 with its fourth loss in the last five games as it must wait to lock up a spot in the top 10. Toko Shengelia had 19 points in a losing effort.
Both teams were hitting three-pointers early, with Virtus leading the entire first quarter. The game was even, 22-22, after 10 minutes. Two quick three-pointers gave Zalgiris its first lead, 28-24, early in the second quarter. Virtus reclaimed the lead and stayed ahead most of the rest of a tight quarter and led 43-49 at intermission thanks to scoring the final 5 points.
Zalgiris got a series of defensive stops and put together a 15-2 run for a 58-51 cushion and it was 61-54 before Virtus stormed back and tied it 63-63. Zalgiris scored the final 5 points of the quarter to lead 68-63 after 30 minutes.
Zalgiris continued to hold strong and led 76-66. Two technicals on Virtus head coach Luca Banchi helped get the gap to 84-71. The guests could not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
