Zalgiris lost the Betsafe-LKL Finals series on the road 89
Zalgiris Kaunas finished the Betsafe-LKL season. Andrea Trinchieri’s team lost to Rytas Vilnius 87-88 (24-23, 24-28, 17-19, 22-18) on the road, ending the final series 1-3.
The hosts scored the first 5 points of the game, but Rolands Smits answered with a two-pointer plus a foul and Edmond Sumner hit 3 three-pointers, 12-13. Zalgiris took the lead after Smits scored inside, and Arnas Butkevicius made 6 points in a row, 20-16. Tomas Dimsa and Lukas Lekavicius finished the first quarter with free throws, 24-23.
The second quarter opened with a three-pointer by Smits, 4 points by Laurynas Birutis and a penetration by Sumner, 33-28. Birutis continued to terrorize his opponents and scored 11 points in a row, 44-39. Lekavicius and Edgaras Ulanovas scored (48-45), but the end of the first half was more successful for Rytas, 48-51.
Sumner tied the result with a three-pointer (51-51), but then Zalgiris failed to score in the next five minutes, 51-59. Then Dovydas Giedraitis scored 2 points, Kevarrius Hayes added a free throw and Sumner made his fifth three-pointer, 57-61. Birutis finished a two-on-two combination, Ulanovas sank free throws and Butkevicius scored 4 points, 65-70.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Sumner scored 4 points, and Birutis made his free throws, 71-73. Then Lekavicius took the initiative and scored 10 points in a row for Zalgiris, 81-79. Soon Lukas tied the score (83-83), and Giedraitis made two baskets to put Zalgiris ahead, 87-86. The opponents scored, and Lekavicius had a chance to snatch the victory, but his wide-open three-pointer didn’t connect, 87-88.
Sumner was the leading scorer for Zalgiris with 21 points and 6 assists. Birutis had 19 points and 9 rebounds, while Lekavicius scored 16 points.
