Sabonis’ jersey will be retired during Zalgiris’ 70th Anniversary Event 0

Zalgiris 70th Anniversary event will be marked with a special ceremony where legendary Arvydas Sabonis will be honored and his #11 jersey will be retired.

Arvydas Sabonis started to play in BC Zalgiris in 1981. During his career in Zalgiris he always wore number 11 and led the team to countless glorious victories and trophies.

“This is the very first BC Zalgiris jersey that will be retired. Arvydas Sabonis absolutely deserved this honor, since he has been such an important figure as a player and the president of the club. We are happy that this ceremony will take place during this season’s biggest basketball event. We hope that many people will come to thank Arvydas Sabonis for what he has achieved and done for Zalgiris and basketball as a whole”, – said Paulius Motiejunas, the director of BC Zalgiris.

Mr. Motiejunas added that other jersey numbers would be retired in honor of other significant Zalgiris’ players in the future as well.

Sabonis is a three-time USSR League champion, the best European basketball player, FIBA World champion, Euroleague champion, the member of the NBA Hall of Fame and a holder of many other titles.

The jersey retirement ceremony will take place during Zalgiris’ 70th Anniversary event on Saturday, 27th of September at 17:10. In addition to this, all the fans will witness a spectacular theatrical show, where glorious BC Zalgiris history will be depicted.

After this, the friendly basketball tournament will start, where Zalgiris Kaunas, Panathinaikos Athens, Galatasaray Istanbul, and Lokomotiv-Kuban Krasnodar will battle for Kaunas Akropolis Cup.
