Mantas Sernius takes reins of Zalgiris youth team 1
After a recent reshuffle in the coaching ranks of Zalgiris-2, Mantas Sernius is set to take over as head coach.
The 35-year-old specialist is currently the Lithuanian women’s national team head coach and has previously coached Betsafe-LKL club Pieno Zvaigzdes.
Sernius has also coached in the youth level, as he took silver with the Under-16 national team in the European championship in 2016. He now inherits a Zalgiris-2 roster with five players who had important roles on the silver-winning squad – Rokas Jokubaitis, Erikas Venskus, Laurynas Vaistaras, Martynas Arlauskas and Arnas Adomavicius.
Zalgiris sports director Robertas Javtokas had high hopes that under Sernius guidance, the youth will be tutored purposefully and will have the opportunity to aim for the highest goals.
“Although he is still a young coach, he has already achieved quite a lot and has already had a close look on the main team’s practices. He understands Sarunas Jasikevicius’ system and will try to instill it on Zalgiris’ youth players. We hope that he will gel with the team quickly and guide the most talented youth in Lithuanian basketball.”
Vytautas Pliauga and Darius Sirtautas will continue with roles in the coaching staff of Zalgiris-2.
