Deon Thompson: “It was a quick and easy decision” 3
Zalgiris’ newest signing Deon Thompson paid a visit to Zalgirio Arena on Tuesday morning. Having reached the country just a half-day before, the 30-year-old had a tour around the locker room, training facilities and tried on his green-and-white Zalgiris jersey.
In his first interview as a Zalgiris player, the big man talked about Zalgiris season and the developments of both his career and his play style.
“It was a quick decision. A quick one and an easy one. When you think of a team like Zalgiris, the city, the fans, the club, the organization, I think it’s a no-brainer for a player like myself to be able to come here and wear this uniform. I didn’t have to think twice and I’m happy to be here.”
Before signing the agreement, Thompson had several reference points talking about Kaunas. Throughout his career, the American has played with a handful of former greens in Justin Dentmon, Nate Wolters and Augusto Lima. He’s also played with two Lithuanians, Tadas Sedekerskis and Deividas Gailius, representing Burgos.
Zalgiris’ newest signing has followed EuroLeague basketball closely and hopes to have an impact on the thinned out Zalgiris front court.
“I’m always following the EuroLeague and watching what’s going on. Obviously, so far injuries have plagued the team, but Zalgiris is still fighting in the EuroLeague. We’re tied for the 9th place now, fighting for the play-offs.”
Up until his season in Spain, Thompson would shy away from long-range shots, but he showed real consistency last season, knocking down 21-of-51 from beyond the arc. According to the player, that is his way of staying relevant in the modern era of basketball.
“I think it’s just the way basketball is now, to be able to play that four position, you have to be able to shoot, to stretch the defense, to make the defense respect you. I think it’s just an advantage to my game. I’m pretty effective down low, in the block, scoring in the post, so I figured if I’m able to add this to my game, it can make me that more dangerous of a player.”
The player also thanked the fans for such a warm welcome and all the messages he’s received.
“Thank you for all the warm welcomes that I received so far through messages. I’m happy to have this jersey on and look forward to making you guys proud.”
