Zalgiris will honor the 1999 champions, as Kazlauskas’ jersey will rise to the Zalgirio Arena rafters 1
The Zalgiris players that conquered European basketball twenty years ago will have a moment to celebrate and remind us all of their accomplishment. On Tuesday, during the halftime of the EuroLeague Quarterfinal against Fenerbahce, Kaunas will celebrate the achievement of the 1999 EuroLeague championship winning squad.
Twenty years ago, on the 22nd of April, 1999, the green-and-white Zalgiris defeated Virtus Bologna 82-74 in Munich and were crowned the kings of European basketball in their debut season. Most of the roster will be there in Zalgirio Arena to bask in the glory once again.
During the halftime break the crowd will have the chance to hand a standing ovation to legendary Zalgiris players: Mindaugas and Eurelijus Zukauskas, Tomas Masiulis, Dainius Adomaitis, Darius Maskoliunas, Saulius Stombergas, Kestutis Sestokas, Giedrius Gustas, Jiri Zidek and the coaching staff. The only absences will be Tyus Edney and Anthony Bowie, who could not make it to Lithuania.
Each one of them will be awarded symbolic copies of the 1999 cup, decorated by the jewelers at Alpera.
The mastermind behind the historic success, Jonas Kazlauskas, will also have his jersey raised in the rafters of Zalgirio Arena during a grand ceremony, where his name will stand alongside Arvydas Sabonis, Modestas Paulauskas and Vladas Garastas.
After the game, fans will be welcome to take photos with the EuroLeague champions and add some legendary autographs to their collection.
Doors to the arena open at 6:30 PM, while tip-off is scheduled at 8 PM.
