Jasikevicius on FC Barcelona: “They probably have the strongest roster in Europe” 4
Zalgiris prepares for its seventh EuroLeague game of the season, as the long-awaited duel against FC Barcelona heads to Kaunas. Before the game, Zalgiris coach Sarunas Jasikevicius talked to the press about their opponents and Marius Grigonis’ injury.
The swingman suffered a foot injury in the game against Fenerbahce and has yet to practice with the team.
“I can’t say if he’ll play tomorrow. We’ll try to look at it if he can practice with the team at 100 percent, which he hasn’t done yet. We’ll decide then. We have to have a balance on how much we can risk, whether it can get worse. We have to take into consideration the fact that it’s still November, and it’s not the time to force things.”
According to the coach, without Grigonis the Kaunas side loses a big part of its game.
“He is one of our main weapons. He is important on both ends of the court. While we still have Walkup on the defensive end, we lose a lot offensively. There’s many games to go, everybody can’t always stay healthy.”
The coach will see the return of young point guard Rokas Jokubaitis, who is all ready and raring to go for tomorrow’s bout.
Barcelona signed a number of star players this summer, adding Nikola Mirotic, Alex Abrines, Brandon Davies and Cory Higgins, amongst others. Jasikevicius is adamant that they’ve got the strongest roster in Europe and how well they’ve been playing despite not having Thomas Heurtel, Kevin Pangos, Pau Ribas and Victor Claver.
“They’ve got unlimited talent. They have the best players in Europe in each position. When you think about it, they’re still missing three-four players, and that’s very impressive. When they all get together, it’s probably the best roster in Europe.”
Despite the injuries in the back court, Barca has not suffered too much quality wise on the court. Jasikevicius addressed Coach Pesic’s philosophy.
“I think it comes down to the basic things which Pesic is known for – discipline, good defense, physicality. In addition to the talent that decides a lot of the outcomes, speaking of their base, their discipline – it’s all these small things.”
