Maskoliunas appointed as head coach of Lithuanian National Team 3
After Tuesday’s Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) meeting in Kaunas, it was announced that Zalgiris assistant coach Darius Maskoliunas will be taking over the reigns of the Lithuanian National Team. The club did not get in the way of him becoming the coach, despite having to take time off during the season.
During the LKF meeting, two candidates were brought up, with the Lithuanian coaches association president Vydas Gedvilas suggesting Antanas Sireika, while LKF president Arvydas Sabonis offered Maskoliunas’ candidature. After a discussion, the members of the board almost unanimously voted in Darius Maskoliunas.
The first challenge for the newly appointed head coach awaits this upcoming February, as the Lithuanian team starts their battles in the EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers. On the 21st of February, Lithuania will head to Belgium, while on the 24th they play Czech Republic at home.
The coach is set to miss only one Zalgiris game, as the green-and-whites look to take on Baskonia on the 20th of February.
The basketball specialist will be put to another test after the club season is over, too, as he will try to guide Lithuania to the Olympics in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament on the 23-28th of June.
