Zalgiris ties key man Walkup to a contract extension 9
Zalgiris is already lining up the troops with next season in mind, as the team announced the contract extension of Thomas Walkup. The 26-year-old will be wearing the green-and-white jersey for at least one more year past this season.
The American first came to Kaunas in 2018. In his debut EuroLeague season with the team, Walkup averaged 5.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 17 minutes of basketball. When it comes to the national front, not only did he win the Lithuanian championship, but he was also chosen as the best defensive player in the league.
The American guard started this season even on a higher note, and 10 EuroLeague games into the year, is already averaging 8.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in an increased role that has him on the court for an average of 24 minutes.
Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius talked about the increased role and noted that he keeps on seeing new levels in Thomas Walkup’s game, not hiding his delight seeing the player resign with Zalgiris.
“He’s one of those players who takes his craft very professionally and responsibly. Thomas Walkup gelled with the team immediately and is now one of the most important people off the court. On the court, he’s improving and has been growing together with the club.” – said Jasikevicius.
Before landing with Zalgiris, Walkup put his skills to use in Germany, representing MHP Riesen.
