Sarunas Jasikevicius set to leave Zalgiris 31
For the first time since 2016, Zalgiris Kaunas will be forced to search for a new head coach, as Sarunas Jasikevicius used the clause in his contract, taking reigns of FC Barcelona next season.
Jasikevicius finished his professional basketball career in a green-and-white jersey in 2014, and initially joined the Zalgiris coaching staff as an assistant. He was then named head coach of the team in 2016.
At the helm of Zalgiris, Saras was five-time Lithuanian champion and added three King Mindaugas Cup victories. He was also named coach of the year three times.
One of Jasikevicius most memorable achievements was reached in 2018, as he guided Zalgiris to the EuroLeague Final Four and took third place.
The 44-year-old makes his move to Spain having left an irreplaceable imprint on the club‘s history and in the fans‘ hearts.
“We were trying to keep Sarunas, but the competition for him was unbelievably large. However it may be, with him at the helm, both the team, and the entire Zalgiris organization made an incredible leap forward. We would like to thank the coach for all his work, and we wish him all the best in his career. Zalgiris’ doors are always open for him,” – noted Zalgiris director Paulius Motiejunas.
Zalgiris will now set search for a new head coach for the upcoming season.
