Zalgiris set to begin season preparations with tournament in Malaga 2
Zalgiris Kaunas is making plans for the preparation for the new season. Next week, Zalgiris will gather for their first team training session.
While the Zalgirio Arena gym and weights rooms have been busy all summer, with players working out individually, the Kaunas team will have their first team training session on the 24th of August.
The first training session will still miss about half of the team, as head coach Kazys Maksvytis and assistant Evaldas Berzininkaitis are working with the Lithuanian national team, which is preparing for EuroBasket 2022 in September with Lukas Lekavicius, Ignas Brazdeikis, Arnas Butkevicius and Tomas Dimsa on the roster.
Tyler Cavanaugh and Rolandas Smits will also represent their national teams in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers window and will arrive in Kaunas in two weeks.
The other two of Zalgiris’ foreigners, Keenan Evans and Kevarrius Hayes, will arrive in Lithuania in a few days, undergoing medical check-ups on Monday, and joining the rest of the team in physical training tests the following day.
The schedule for the friendly matches is also slowly becoming clearer. It is still subject to adjustments, but it is clear that mid-September Zalgiris will travel to Malaga for a week-long training camp and a friendly tournament.
On the 12th of September they will play against Unicaja Malaga, followed by a meeting against Real Madrid on the 13th. Zalgiris is also likely play one more friendly game with a local team in Spain.
Before the tournament, two matches should be played in Kaunas. The two teams on the schedule are Polski Cukier Pszczolka Start from Lublin, Poland and Seawolves from Rostock, Germany.
After the conclusion of EuroBasket 2022 and before the Betsafe-LKL championship starts, Zalgiris will also play against Alytus Wolves and Riga VEF in Kaunas.
Some of the friendlies will also be broadcast LIVE, available for Zalgiris Insider MVP plan subscribers.
