Zalgiris beats VEF Riga for the second victory of the pre-season 13
Zalgiris Kaunas won the second pre-season game. Kazys Maksvytis’ team defeated VEF Riga by 80-59 (18-18, 25-13, 23-12, 14-16) on Wednesday.
Lithuanian champions shared the ball well at the beginning of the game: Laurynas Birutis and Lukas Lekavicius scored after passes from Edgaras Ulanovas, Keenan Evans found Ulanovas for a three-pointer and connected from long range after assist from Lekavicius, 10-6. Ulanovas also made a mid-range shot, Birutis posted-up his opponent, Kevarrius Hayes dunked after a pass from Dovydas Giedraitis, and Arnas Butkevicius’ closed the first period from the free-throw line, 18-18.
Butkevicius scored 5 more points at the start of the second quarter, while Hayes and Naz Mitrou-Long followed for a 27-25 lead. Birutis and Butkevicius scored inside,Lekavicius and Ulanovas made a three-pointer each, 38-30. Lekavicius and Nedas Montvila scored from the free throw line, and the tandem of Davidas Butka and Ulanovas finished the quarter with a perfect fastbreak, 43-31.
Right after halftime Brady Manek scored 8 points in a row, 51-34. Hayes was feasting on defense, Dovydas Giedraitis turned a nice ball movement into a three-pointer, and Butkevicius made a reverse lay-up, 57-41. The 9-0 spurt was completed by 4 points from Hayes and free throws from Lekavicius and Ulanovas, 66-43.
In the final quarter, Zalgiris didn’t make a basket for more than four minutes, 66-52. Birutis stopped the scoring spree with a free throw, Ulanovas drove to the basket, Mitrou-Long scored five points, Evans and Butkevicius hit a three-pointer each for the final score of 80-59.
Butkevicius was the leading scorer with 15 points. Ulanovas added 13 points and 5 assists.
