EuroLeague champions prevail against Zalgiris in Madrid 2
In a battle of previously undefeated teams, Zalgiris Kaunas lost to Real Madrid 79-93 in Round 3 in the Spanish capital on Tuesday. Real improved to 3-0 in the standings while Zalgiris dropped to 2-1.
Gabriel Deck paced the winners with 19 points. Facundo Campazzo and Vincent Poirier each added 18 for Los Blancos. Campazzo added 9 assists and Sergio Rodriguez dished 6.
Rolands Smits led Zalgiris with 12 points. Naz Mitrou-Long and Brady Manek each added 11 while Lukas Lekavicius and Dovydas Giedraitis had 10 apiece for the guests.
Campazzo had 14 points in the first quarter, including back-to-back triples that gave Real a 19-25 lead after 10 minutes. The hosts found new go-to guys in Poirier and Mario Hezonja to keep a double-digit margin, 43-53, at halftime.
Smits took over after the break, getting help from Lekavicus and Manek to give Zalgiris hope at 62-67. Deck and an unstoppable Poirier fueled a game-breaking 10-0 run that Sergio Llull capped with a ‘mandarina’ three-pointer, as Real boosted its margin to 62-77 and never looked back.
