Zalgiris ends the week with a win in Panevezys 5
Zalgiris Kaunas (10-2) recorded their tenth victory in the Betsafe-LKL Championship. After a strong fourth quarter, Kaunas team defeated 7bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys (8-4) 80-68 (17-15, 13-17, 21-21, 29-15) on the road.
Edgaras Ulanovas was the first Zalgiris player to open the game, Laurynas Birutis scored 4 points and Dovydas Giedraitis drove to the basket, 8-7. After a 2+1 by Lukas Lekavicius and 4 points by Tomas Dimsa, Kaunas’ team pulled away 15-7, but only Kevarrius Hayes scored for the visitors in the remaining 3 minutes of the first quarter, 17-15.
Zalgiris had some struggles with rebounding and soon had to chase their opponents. Danielius Lavrinovicius and Keenan Evans scored from under the basket, and Giedraitis tied the score with a three-pointer, 24-24. The hosts hit their 7th three-pointer of the game, and in the next 6 minutes only Evans,.Giedraitis and Hayes scored on the other end of the court, 30-32.
Nikola Popovic scored 8 points for 7bet-Lietkabelis at the start of the third quarter (34-40). Lekavicius responded with 5 points, while Roland Smits made a tip-in and Giedraitis and Ulanovas got inside, 42-42. Zalgiris’ 12-0 spurt was capped by a two-pointer by Hayes and a long shot by Lavrinovicius, 48-42. Evans also scored a three-pointer, but the hosts responded with 3 three-pointers of their own to take the lead again, 51-53.
In the fourth period, Zalgiris turned on another gear. Dimsa and Birutis scored, while Evans got hot with 3 three-pointers in a row, 64-60. Dimsa and Smits took over the baton with long-range shots, while Ulanovas added a floater, 72-65. The game was closed by three-pointers from Smits and Lekavicius, 80-68.
Evans finished the game with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Lekavicius added 13 points for Zalgiris.
