Zalgiris ends the first part of the EuroLeague with a loss to Maccabi 73
Zalgiris Kaunas (5-12) ended the first part of the EuroLeague regular season with a loss. Kazys Maksvytis’ team lost 70-78 (18-16, 15-16, 16-29, 21-17) to Maccabi Tel Aviv (10-7) at Zalgirio Arena.
Rolands Smits scored the Zalgiris’ first points, while Edmond Sumner made three three-pointers in a row to make it 11-6. Edgaras Ulanovas added a three-pointer himself, Austin Hollins made two free throws and Lukas Lekavicius finished the quarter with a floater, 18-16.
Sumner made a sharp drive and a free throw, Keenan Evans and Laurynas Birutis scored their first points, 25-25. Birutis scored two more points, Evans added four and Dovydas Giedraitis made two free throws just before the halftime, 33-32.
Birutis made a putback, Evans was accurate on three free throws, Sumner successfully invaded the paint again, and Ulanovas scored a two-pointer, 42-45. Giedraitis made a great run under the basket, Evans added three points, Kevarrius Hayes scored two, but the opponents played a great stretch and the Zalgiris lost the lead, 49-61.
Smits scored four points in a row, Giedraitis and Ulanovas hit a three-pointer each, Evans had another two-pointer and Birutis dunked it home to make it 63-69. Brady Manek made a great shot from long range, Evans scored four more points, but it didn’t save Zalgiris from defeat, 70-78.
Josh Nebo led all scorers with a career-high 22 points. Tamir Blatt scored 14, with Lorenzo Brown, Roman Sorkin and Bonzie Colson adding 11 each for Maccabi.
As for Zalgiris, Evans scored a team-high 18 points and Sumner added 14.
