Zalgiris loses physicality battle to ASVEL on the road 39
Zalgiris Kaunas (6-13) lost the EuroLeague Round 19 game to ASVEL Villeurbanne (3-16) on the road. Team, coached by Andrea Trinchieri, lost 79-93 (17-23, 26-28, 16-21, 20-21).
Laurynas Birutis, Edgaras Ulanovas and Lukas Lekavicius each scored at the start of the game, but Kaunas’ team had trouble defending, 6-16. In the remaining four minutes of the period, Lekavicius scored four points, Austin Hollins made two free throws and a two-pointer, and Rolands Smits made a long-range shot to make it 17-23.
Smits had two shots from under the basket, Keenan Evans made a basket with a foul, Lekavicius was good on a floater, and Ulanovas scored three points, 29-31. Evans made three three-pointers, Edmond Sumner had a successful drive to the basket and Tomas Dimsa made a three-pointer from the corner, 43-51.
Smits, Evans and Lekavicius hit three-pointers, but the difference grew, 52-63. Dimsa added a two-pointer, Brady Manek scored with a foul, and Kevarrius Hayes and Evans scored a point each on free throws, 59-72.
Evans connected again from long range and Dimsa scored after offensive rebound, but the difference grew even more, 64-82. Smits, Dimsa and Manek scored a three-pointer each, Sumner and Evans raided the basket, Lekavicius made free throws, but they couldn’t close the gap, 79-93.
Evans had 21 points to pace Zalgiris, which also had Lekavicius, Smits and Dimsa scoring in double figures after providing 13, 13 and 10, respectively.
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot led all scorers with 27 points, on an almost perfect shooting night, going for 10-of-11 from the field. Youssoupha Fall followed with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds for a PIR of 36, while Paris Lee also netted 22 points, plus adding 8 assists and 5 rebounds.
