Zalgiris ends week with a win in Jonava 11
Returning to the Lithuanian championship after a double EuroLeague week Zalgiris Kaunas (13-2) won the game in Jonava. Andrea Trinchieri’s team defeated CBet Jonava (7-9) 75-67 (16-15, 25-13, 17-17, 17-22).
Dovydas Giedraitis hit free throws, Laurynas Birutis and Edmond Sumner scored four points each, and Austin Hollins made three free throws to extend Zalgiris’ good start to 13-4. However, Kaunas team didn’t score for four minutes (13-12), and Kevarrius Hayes scored three points in the remaining timeout of the first quarter to make it 16-15.
Birutis dunked it home, Rolands Smits added four points and Sumner scored seven points in a row, 29-15. Edgaras Ulanovas and Birutis scored from the free-throw line, Brady Manek had 4 points including the dunk, and Smits and Lukas Lekavicius finished the first half with two two-pointers to make it 41-28.
Birutis scored seven points, Lekavicius, Smits and Tomas Dimsa added to the tally, and Ulanovas made a free throw, 54-37. Hayes made free throws, Smits added another two-pointer, but the difference was slightly reduced, 58-45.
Lekavicius and Dimsa connected from long range, Ulanovas scored two points, but the difference was reduced to single digits, 66-57. Smits scored seven points in a row and Lekavicius’ free throws sealed the victory, 75-67.
Birutis and Smits were leading scorers for Zalgiris with 15 points, while Sumner added 11.
