Zalgiris wins over Rytas in Betsafe-LKL leaders’ duel 24
Zalgiris Kaunas became the sole leaders of Betsafe-LKL. Andrea Trinchieri’s team defeated Rytas Vilnius 97-94 (28-26, 23-22, 21-28, 25-18) in a packed Zalgirio Arena.
Arnas Butkevicius and Laurynas Birutis scored inside, Dovydas Giedraitis converted a steal into 2+1, and Edgaras Ulanovas hit a three-pointer to make it 10-8. Birutis scored four points, Rolands Smits had five, Keenan Evans and Lukas Lekavicius connected from long range, Giedraitis hit a free throw and Edmond Sumner made a layup, 28-26.
Danielius Lavrinovicius added a point from the free-throw line, Sumner scored eight points and Birutis tied the score, 39-39. Butkevicius sank free throws, Lekavicius scored six consecutive points, and Giedraitis and Sumner added two points each at the end of the quarter, 51-48.
After the break, Sumner made a free throw, Evans scored six points and Birutis and Smits scored two points each, 62-66. The deficit was double-digit at one point (62-72), but then Lekavicius hit a three-pointer, Smits made a shot from under the basket and Dimsa scored five points, 72-76.
Brady Manek started the quarter with a three-pointer, Dimša and Birutis dunked it home, and Lekavicius scored five points to lead Kaunas 84-80. Birutis scored two free throws and a finished an alley-oop, Evans scored a two-pointer with a foul, but with half a minute to play, Zalgiris was chasing the opponents, 91-94. Evans scored four points in a row and Ulanovas clinched the victory with free throws, 97-94.
Lekavicius led the scorers with 17 points. Evans and Birutis added 16 each, while Sumner scored 13.
