Bad shooting holds Zalgiris down in Monaco 10
Zalgiris Kaunas (14-19) suffered a defeat in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Round 33 game. Andrea Trinchieri’s team lost 66-69 (11-20, 18-19, 12-15, 22-18) to AS Monaco (22-11) on the road.
Mike James led the way for Monaco with a game-high 18 points, followed by Donatas Motiejunas with 14 and Jaron Blossomgame with 11, all of which came in the first half.
For Zalgiris, Keenan Evans scored 8 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to help keep things close. Brady Manek also had 12 points and Kevarrius Hayes added 11.
Monaco got off to a good start and led by 4-15 with 2:37 left in the first quarter, with James and Motiejunas combining for 13 of those points. At the end of the first period, the hosts were up by nine points, 11-20.
Zalgiris started to find its rhythm a little better in the second quarter, but Monaco did enough to keep the visitors at arm’s length en route to a 29-39 halftime scoreline.
Hayes came out for the second half in inspired form and helped Zalgiris cut the gap to six points, 35-41, but missed three after missed three allowed Monaco to take control once more, leading 44-51after 30 minutes.
Monaco was up by 12 points, 49-61, with six minutes left before Hayes, Evans and Manek led a late charge that saw Zalgiris get closer and closer. However, time eventually ran out for the visitors as Monaco won 66-69.
