Anadolu Efes buys out Rolands Smits from Zalgiris 11
Rolands Smits will not play for Zalgiris Kaunas in the upcoming season. The Latvian has exercised the option to leave, for which his new team – Anadolu Efes Istanbul – will pay a hefty buy-out.
“We knew that sooner or later there would be a time when we would have to say goodbye to Rolands. He is a high-level player, has a name in Europe and has been hunted by big clubs for some time,” said Zalgiris President Paulius Jankunas.
In the 2023-2024 EuroLeague season, the big man averaged 10.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
In the Lithuanian championship, Smits had an average of 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
“I will miss Zalgiris fans the most, who supported us unconditionally all the time. I felt at home in Kaunas, we had a lot of good moments, so I will leave with only the best memories. It’s time for new challenges,” said Smits in his farewell speech.
The representative of Latvian national team joined Zalgiris in 2022, became Lithuanian champion once and won the King Mindaugas Cup twice.
