Zalgiris defeats Lietuvos Rytas for the third time 0
It seems like things are just too easy for Zalgiris in the Lithuanian League (LKL) as the club from Kaunas strolled to their twentieth victory of the season destroying Lietuvos Rytas in Vilnius 74-57 (11-12, 19-7, 24-22, 20-16) and to remain unbeaten in the domestic league just yet.
This was the third time this season that Zalgiris came out stronger against their biggest rivals from Vilnius, winning the first meeting between the sides in LKL in Kaunas 85-60, as well as taking the Lithuanian Cup final 81-69.
“We were concentrated and prepared for the game. We played good defense and when you play good defense, you usually win. Also, we played good on the offensive end as well. However, it was only a single game and there’s plenty of matches remaining,” Zalgiris coach Ilias Zouros said in the post-game press-conference.
Marcus Brown led Zalgiris with 14 points, Mantas Kalnietis and DeJuan Collins scored 11 each while Paulius Jankunas and Tadas Klimavicius finished the game with 9 each. Martynas Pocius had 8 as Trent Plaisted added 5 for the visitors.
“We were late everywhere at least a second, except in the first quarter. We managed to defend without fouling which allowed us to play successfully on offense,” said Lietuvos Rytas coach Aleksandr Trifunovic.
Lietuvos Rytas’ leading scorer was Martynas Gecevicius, who finished with 13 points, Simas Jasaitis had 12 while Steponas Babrauskas and Milko Bjelica had 7 and 6 points respectively.
