A EuroLeague record that’s withstood 15 years – Tanoka Beard’s historical performance 9
On the 22nd of January, back in 2004, Zalgiris big man Tanoka Beard set a record that would stand for years in the EuroLeague, as he put up a one-man show against Skipper Bologna.
Exactly 15 year ago, Beard dropped 35 points and 19 rebounds against the Italian side, amassing an all-time best efficiency rating of 63. While Zalgiris was unable to take home the victory, as they fell short 107-117, it was a performance for the ages by Beard and the record has stood ever since.
The long-time member of the team made good on 11-of-14 field goals, converted on all 13 free-throws, drew 11 fouls and tore down 19 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end.
“I mostly remember that big Sabas was injured and we needed a victory to stay in a strong position to advance,” Beard said. “Honestly I haven’t thought much about that record but it’s nice to be reminded of it. Like any other record it will be broken. A player would just need to focus on the bigger picture and give everything they have for their team and it will happen.”
Nowadays Zalgiris captain Paulius Jankunas was playing his debut season back then and clearly remembers the incredible showcase from his teammate.
“Even after 15 years I remember that game. We played on the road in Italy and it was a high-scoring game. From the early minutes we saw that Tanoka Beard has it going and that it might be his night. If I remember right, he started the game really aggressively and kept his mojo throughout all the game. It was really impressive numbers: points, rebounds and efficiency – amazing numbers.”
