Zalgiris inks Marek Blazevic on long-term deal 27
Zalgiris reveals its third signing of the offseason, as 18-year-old Marek Blazevic joins Tomas Dimsa and Steve Vasturia in a green-and-white jersey.
A member of numerous Lithuanian youth national teams, Blazevic spent his basketball years in Vilnius’, and received several offers from abroad after the season. While the big man revealed he was close to taking his career abroad, he ultimately chose Zalgiris.
Last season the center averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in almost 12 minutes of action in the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL).
“It was a difficult decision, since I was already one foot abroad. But then I received a call from Robertas Javtokas, met up with the coach. That turned the tables to where we are now. I think it will be a good decision.”
The basketball player revealed that Zalgiris’ head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius played a big part in turning him towards Kaunas. The team’s strategist won the young player with his honesty.
“His interpersonal qualities left an impression, but first and foremost – his honesty. Also, the way unbelievable way he understands basketball, and just how simple of a person he is. Perhaps he looks scary on the sidelines, yelling at everybody, but he really is an ordinary and down-to-earth person.”
Blazevic made a mark last season playing several great games against Zalgiris that drew the eyes of the basketball community. His play wasn’t the only thing that turned some heads, though, as he went toe to toe in physical battles with Zalgiris veterans.
“If people would watch all of my games, they’d see that I put my heart out there on the court. I’ll never back down from an opponent. In the last year I matured, my goals got bigger, my love for the game grew, my attitude changed. I took a big step forward.”
The big man, who signed a three-year deal with Zalgiris, and has put his name into the NBA draft, had a message for the green-and-white fan army.
“I think I will surprise you.”
